Quinn’s Quickies: Eloquent Phillies Fans and the Best Reason Ever to be an Eagles Fan

Image
It ’ s been a busy week doing an article for my other blog , but I got two great videos for Quinn ’ s Quickies. The first is from Jimmy Kimmel showing some eloquent Phillies fans after their season ended abruptly. I can ’ t say I agree with everything they say, but I share their emotions for the results. The second video is from ESPN and may be the best damn reason ever for me to go back to being an Eagles fan. It details how Princess Diana became a quasi-fan. Let ’ s just say, I was a fan of Princess Di. Oooh, was I fan! Phillies Fans (Video should start at about 9:38 mark for Phillies portion) Best Reason Ever to be an Eagles Fan

NFL Week 7, College Football Picks 🏈🏈🏈

My picks have been pretty bad lately. I went 1-4-1 for -$36 last week, losing for a third straight week. By the way, is it just me or is there some seriously bad football being played? I tossed out the following parlay earlier in the week to my nephew and brother: USC -6.5 (-118) vs. Utah Miami (FL) +120 (money line) vs. Clemson Michigan -24.5 (-104) @ Michigan State North Carolina -24 (-109) vs. Virginia Penn State +160 (m oney line) @ Ohio State Odds were +3903 They shot down USC pretty quick. But Utah’s been up and down all year and has had a lot of injuries. I’ll be looking at all of these games individually. In the NFL, three games interest me: Dolphins +120 (money line) @ Eagles Chiefs -5.5 (-109) vs. Chargers 49ers -7 (-104) @ Vikings My nephew sent me a prop: Tyreek Hill 100+ yards receiving (-108) His thought is that Hill will be covered by Josh Jobe (leaving out the smartass middle name that was offered up). I kind of like it. Can you do better

Quinn’s Quickies: Gushing over the Phillies, Eagles gotta run, Reviewing NFL Replay, more ⚾🏈

I enjoy writing Quinn’s Quickies. I hope you’re enjoying reading my rapid fire look at sports in Philly and beyond. Let’s do it: A Baseball town?  As I write, the Phillies are up 2-0 in the NLCS going into Game 3 at Arizona just after 5 today. All I can do is gush over this team right now 🀩. Manager Rob Thomson drives me crazy with all his pitching changes, but all he does is get it right. Matt Strahm gets the save in the clinching game against the Braves because Jose Alvarado and Craig Kimbrel were already used in high pressure situations? Are ya kiddin’ me? Bryce Harper makes me feel like a little kid watching his favorite player. Kyle Schwarber’s first pitch leadoff homers keep coming. Trae Turner looks like he’s going to be the guy to put them over the top. Zach Wheeler and Aaron Nola look like the best 1-2 punch on the mound in baseball. So, here’s my question: Is Philadelphia a baseball town? I’ve never heard national broadcaster

Week 6 NFL, College Football Picks 🏈🏈🏈

Now it’s Friday the 13 th ? Great. After going 1-3 last week for -$32, I definitely need to do my picks on the day set aside for bad luck. And, where are my commenters – no picks for two weeks? I’m not looking to suck all alone! So far, I don’t love or even like any games this week. We’re in the middle of October and I’m seeing spreads of 40+ points in college football. Penn State is playing UMass. Why? They’ve already played Delaware and Northwestern. How many warm-ups did they schedule? Georgia plays Vanderbilt at -31.5, and Michigan has Indiana at -33 (which I might actually take). These numbers are per ESPN’s college football scoreboard on Friday around noon. I have to dig in and read about these games, but here’s what I’m looking at: Eagles -7 @ Jets – I like the Birds to win, but it’s their second straight road game and a non-conference game. Questionable on the spread. Saints -1.5 @ Houston Cowboys -2 @ Chargers   Oregon +3 @ Washington FSU -18.5 vs. Syracuse

Quinn’s Quickies: Harper’s Aggression, Harper’s Revenge, Sixers Visit Prime, more ⚾πŸ€πŸˆ

A second straight week of my rapid fire look at sports in Philly and beyond. What more could you ask for? Let’s do it: Phillies Fever is popping up all over. Saw this  blow-up Phanatic on a walk in my neighborhood. Harper’s aggression. Bryce Harper made the final out of Game 2 of the NLDS on Monday in Atlanta on a deep fly ball to right center when he ran past second base from first and had to try to make it back to first after the ball was caught. Nationally, I heard it called the worst baserunning blunder in post-season history. I didn’t hear much criticism locally. I’ll live with it on two fronts. First, it’s Harper, already one of the best players I’ve seen in a Phillies uniform, and his aggressive style of play is a big part of his greatness. Secondly, I think you should always run the bases aggressively. (Heck, I wanted him to try to steal second, which would make baseball purists scoff.) It’s clichΓ© to say, but the best hitters in baseball fail 7 out of 10 times. When the ball’

Bad picks, bad luck, and even a “bad beat,” added up to a 3-7 record last week for -$46.55 on the blog. I grabbed most of it back on my own with two bets on halftime lines on Penn State and the Eagles. I’d previously only bet one or two halftime lines with disastrous results. In the games last weekend, I felt like I had a very clear line of logic to make the bets. πŸ€” Both teams were originally heavily favored, both lines were cut dramatically, and, watching each game, I felt confident they would both return to form in the second half. The Nittany Lions rewarded that confidence, covering the halftime spread and the game line. The Eagles . . . covered the halftime spread. Here’s what I’m thinking about this week: Eagles -4.5 (-114) @ Rams – This is a Philly Sports Blog, after all!  It finally dawned on me that I should always have the Eagles game first in this post, whether I’m seriously looking at it or not. It doesn’t really jump out at me, but it -4.5 seems low. Although, as I w

Quinn’s Sports Quickies: Phillies Move On, Tush Push Whines, more ⚾πŸˆπŸ˜πŸ€

It’s been a while since I tried my rapid fire look around sports. I’m re-dubbing it Quinn’s Sports Quickies. As always, get in the comments with your thoughts. Let’s do it: Catch and release. The Phillies dismissed the Miami Marlins in the Wild Card Series 2-0 🍾 behind dominant pitching by Zach Wheeler (6.2 innings pitched, 1 earned run) and Aaron Nola (7 IP, 0 ER). The bats did their part, delivering 4 and 7 runs, in what were, quite frankly, easy wins. Now the Phillies face the 104-win Atlanta Braves in the division series beginning Saturday. Interestingly, the broadcast of last night’s game mentioned that the National League has a day off Sunday. I’m not sure if there is a travel day Tuesday or possibly next Thursday (before Game 5). But if Rob Thomson can get three starts collectively from Wheeler and Nola in the 5-game series, I think the Phillies upset the Braves. Push Eagles Push. Mike Sielski wrote a great piece in the Inquirer detailing some of the whining going on ab

Despite Win, Sirianni Questioned by Fans

Image
The Eagles are 4-0, yet for at least the second time this season fans are questioning Nick Sirianni’s decision-making skills despite Sunday’s win over Washington. On 2 nd and 4 on Washington’s 28-yard line with just under 2 minutes remaining in a tie game, Jalen Hurts connected with A.J. Brown for a go-ahead touchdown. The complaint from fans? The Eagles left too much time on the clock for the Commanders to score. Conventional thinking in the NFL has become holding the ball as long as possible in a situation like the one the Birds faced to give the opposing team no chance to score on their subsequent possession. Fans are arguing that the Eagles should have tried to get the first down, run the clock almost all the way down, and kick a game winning field goal. It’s difficult to argue with the fans here – especially given that Washington did exactly what they feared. Assisted by a taunting call on Brown, the Commanders sent the game to overtime with a TD of their own with no time l
