NFL Week 4, College Picks ๐Ÿˆ Peeking at the Phillies World Series Odds ⚾

Image
A 4-1-1 record for $26.70 with picks last week was a nice bounce back on the blog. Nice, not great, considering the total. But I had to go with what I felt. I just didn’t love any of the games last week. It’s a good example of why gambling on sports is all about the money total. ๐Ÿ’ฐ I guarantee there’s plenty of guys selling picks online who would be crowing about a 4-1-1 record, but it doesn’t mean squat if they didn’t put an amount on each wager. If the one loss is a big bet and the four wins are for minimum amounts, it could be nothing but a losing week. By the way, I have zero intentions of ever selling picks. I don’t understand why anyone would ever buy anyone else’s pick. ๐Ÿค” It’s stupid. The point spread makes these games a toss-up. Do you really think some guy yelling into his iPhone camera knows more about a game than the people setting the line? There’s just no reason to buy a pick. My whole thought in putting picks on the blog is to have some fun with readers. I’m a guy

NFL Week 3 and College Picks ๐Ÿˆ

Dad always said, “Don’t bet with your heart.” ❤️   Sage advice that just didn’t pay off for me last week. I had a tough 2-4 run for -$38.15 last week. I capped the week going against the Steelers, who I root for, and watched them bookend a win over Cleveland with defensive touchdowns. Nick Chubbs going down for the Browns didn’t help things. So, I thought I’d ask my beloved readers a “poll” question. And since we’re in Philly, I’ll couch it in terms of the Birds.   If you have the Eagles as a lock to LOSE against the spread,  would you bet against them?   Get in the comments and give me your thoughts. ๐Ÿค” Signing up for Disqus is easy. I’m just looking to have some fun with the blog . . . and that means hearing from you! ๐Ÿ’ฌ Throw some picks out while you’re there, including props. Again, have fun in the comments – no spam, no BS, and don’t rip others. That’s my job! I already heard from one reader with his picks: Oregon State – money line Ole Miss +7.5 Duke -22.5 I’

Numbers Support More “Nola Nights” in October

Image
“Nola Night” used to be a phrase that let Philadelphia Phillies fans push out their chests. Aaron Nola, the presumed ace of the Phils pitching staff, was on the mound and fans expected a win. Lately, hearing “Nola Night” might cause the faithful to feel some trepidation. After today’s win, Philadelphia leads Arizona by 2.5 games for the top Wild Card spot in the National League and is 3.5 games ahead of Chicago (playing tonight) to make the playoffs. And some fans are wondering if Nola should start if they reach the playoffs. Nola’s performance Wednesday may have given fans a sigh of relief. Helping the Phillies to a 6-5 win over the Atlanta Braves, the pitcher completed 6 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs with 8 strikeouts and 0 walks in the rubber match of the series. Yet, Nola’s only been the pitcher of record once in September, getting the loss in Milwaukee early in the month giving up 7 earned runs in just 4.2 innings. Today was the first time he got out of the 5 th inning

NFL Week 2 and College Picks

I never made last night’s game an official pick, but I would have pushed with Minnesota +6 anyway. I even wrote that I thought they’d cover, not win. And, I would write a post-game analysis, but it would almost be a repeat of my preview of the game. (E’hm.) The Eagles dominated the banged-up offensive line of the Vikings. The pass rush limited the damage being done to a secondary that was also dealing with injuries, and continued to make Minnesota look turnover prone, at least early in the season. I’ll be adding picks to the comments section later. As I mentioned yesterday, I was 5-1 or 5-2 last week depending how you want to look at it. I lost what was basically a free pick on DraftKings for $20.50 on Kansas City, which I warned readers was made before news broke that Travis Kelce was hurt. On Sugar House, where I’ve actually deposited money, I went 5-1 for +45.35. Right now, I’m looking at Penn State -14.5 at Illinois (not a great number) and Louisville -10 at Indiana. Duke -18

Rob’s Sports Quickies: Eagles Week 2 Preview, Looking at the Line, Maybe Preseason Matters, more

Image
It’s a quick week for the Eagles, so what better time to introduce Rob’s Sports Quickies on the “Ink.” Quick turnaround. The Eagles play tonight, four days after they played in the late afternoon window on Sunday. But the NFL is concerned about player safety, right? Hosting Minnesota, the Birds could face a tough task defensively against the Vikings. Last week, the Eagles gave up 316 passing yards and 3 touchdowns to New England quarterback Mac Jones, and that was after a disastrous start for the Patriots offense that included an interception, a fumble by Ezekiel Elliot, and three 3-and-outs. Now, they face an often-criticized Kirk Cousins who passed for 344 yards and 2 touchdowns in a losing effort to a Tampa Bay defense with seven starters who remain from their 2020 Super Bowl championship, per ESPN . Fourth year receiver Justin Jefferson accounted for 150 of those yards on 9 receptions. Cousins also threw an interception and lost two fumbles in the 20-17 loss. It doesn’t help

Debating Sirianni’s 4th-and-2 Decision

Image
Nick Sirianni has already built a reputation as a head coach who takes risks. Entering just his third with the Eagles, he’s already brought the team to a Super Bowl and his 23-11 record in the first two seasons gives him the most wins of any head coach for the franchise  in the same time frame. There’s no arguing with his success so far. Photo credit: Donna Quinn But did the Eagles win Sunday’s season opener at New England despite Siranni’s decision to go for a first down on a 4 th -and-2 coming out of the 2-minute warning in the fourth quarter? The Eagles were on the Patriots 46-yard line, leading 25-20. There was exactly 2 minutes left on the clock. The Eagles offense had accumulated a total of 252 yards, one touchdown, and 4 field goals all day. A first quarter 16-0 lead had been cut to 5 points. (The defense scored early on a  “ pick-6. ” ) The Patriots had scored a touchdown on a 6-play, 75-yard drive just over 90 seconds of game time earlier, and the Eagles gave the ball b

Kickoff ‘23

The Linc will be rockin' again this season. (Photo credit: Pat Quinn) It’s the most wonderful time of the year ๐ŸŽถ . . . for sports fans. Football is back, there’s nothing better than meaningful fall baseball, and basketball isn’t far off. The sports writer in me always wants to come out and play when the weather turns a little cooler (the weather people say it’s happening this weekend). So, I’m dusting off my Blogger account and seeing if I can get the motor running on Rob Q. Ink – A Philly Sports Blog. The NFL kicks off their season tonight with the Detroit Lions facing the reigning Super Bowl Champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. If you’re wondering how the hell the Lions got part of this marquee matchup, I’m right there with ya. But it’s the only national Thursday night game fans are able to watch without paying for a streaming service, so shut up and enjoy it (said the NFL ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿˆ). (The guide on our cable service has next week ’ s Eagles game airing on FOX 29. I do not believe
