Gut Reaction to Eagles Week 2 Stunning Loss
There’s no other way to feel
writing just after a Monday night Eagles loss in the home opener against the Falcons.
Stopping the Falcons on 4th down on Atlanta’s 39-yard line late in
the fourth quarter, the Eagles had the game in hand. Leading 18-15 with a little
more than 5-and-a-half minutes on the clock, the Eagles coughed up victory.
After two first downs and exhausting
Atlanta’s timeouts, they faced a 3rd-and-3 on the Falcons’ 10. A pass
to Saquon Barkley was dropped, and the Eagles settled for a field goal.
After a touchback on the ensuing
kick off, Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins needed only 1:05 to drive his team
to a game-winning touchdown.
A final drive by the Birds . .
. Philly’s Birds . . . starting with about 30 seconds left in the game and ended
with an interception.
This is where I need a guy (or
woman) screaming into a video camera for these gut reactions to Eagles games. But
here’s mine:
What the hell is Nick Sirianni
doing not kicking a field goal from the Atlanta 9-yard line in the first
quarter? It was their second offensive series of the game, and, oh, by the way their
best receiver’s inactive (AJ Brown). Take the 3 points, Nick! They go for a 4th-and-4
and get zip.
Same drive, Barkley is running through
the defense and . . . pretty much disappeared. I understand that they get
tired, “need a blow” as they say, but what the hell? He had rushes of 9, 9, 10,
and 11 yards, on 4 out of 6 plays, then didn’t touch the ball the rest of the drive.
On the Eagles lone touchdown
drive in the first half, Jalen Hurts lead the way . . . rushing. He rushed for 23,
9, and 15 yards. The box score (ESPN) calls them scrambles. Believe that if you
want. On the second to last drive for the Eagles? One rush, for one yard (I think
on a “tush push”).
This was a bad loss. The “D” (and “O,” really) choked, but so’d Sirianni.
