2010 Tournament Thoughts & Picks
It’s that time of year when people think they can pull off saying “Top o’ the mornin’ to ya” and college coaches of weak basketball teams bitch about expanding the NCAA basketball tournament. Here’s some of my thoughts on the tournament, followed (I hope) by a copy of my bracket.
• Do we have to do it every year? Listening to college coaches “make a case” for why their mediocre or underachieving or mid-major team really should be the 34th at-large team is just boring. Stop already. You suck, and you weren’t going to win anyway.
• Why is everybody so determined to destroy the tournament? The idea of expanding it to 128 teams is a joke. I’ve actually heard some commentators say it would be good because more coaches would have the tournament on their resume – and they said it with a straight face. Have these people ever heard of the concept of something being watered down? No one cares about the NIT. Why include those teams? Does anyone even care about the play-in game? It’s a playoff, people! Everybody doesn’t get to play.
• Even the President is disrespecting Temple, picking them to lose to the Ivy League’s Cornell. Ouch. Look, I’m a Villanova fan, and I thought Temple would get a better seed. But all the crying about Temple (or any other team) being a 5 instead of a 4 or a 3 is another exercise in the inane! Who gives a damn? I’ll even admit that I don’t like having ‘Nova with 3 wins, and they benefited from a higher seed than they deserved. But eventually they’ll have to beat a good team. Temple plays Cornell! If anything, they might have gotten a tougher opponent as a higher seed. Fans should stop complaining just like coaches and enjoy the damn games.
