Quinn’s Quickies: Thoughts on what I’m hearing around Philly sports
It’s that time of year when there’s not a whole lot going on in the Philadelphia sports world, so we get a lot of BS on sports talk. Here’s a few Quinn’s Quickies on what I’ve heard:
- DeSean Jackson apparently has a new podcast and is ripping the Eagles and the media for a story that supposedly portrayed him as a gang banger. Just to be clear, I don’t remember this much if at all. It’s ringing a bell because I heard about it on Jon Marks’ show. But I seriously wonder – who gives a shit? Anyone? This is part of what drove me away from sports talk and, somewhat, the Eagles. I do not f’ing care. I like Marks and his shows, and I get that you have to do something for a show (says the guy writing about it). But the desperate measures guys employ to talk Eagles is absolutely mind numbing.
- AJ Brown is a Patriot now, right? Right? It was a foregone conclusion that he was gone from Philadelphia before the draft. Reports were that the Eagles receiver had a rift with quarterback Jalen Hurts over a woman so he had to go. Right? Uh, not quite. He got a new contract with the Eagles.
- I’m
seeing multiple reports that TNT is losing the NBA to NBC, which means Peacock.
And that means we won’t be seeing NBA playoff games without paying more money. I
just hope those NBA owners can make ends meet now.
- The
Phillies game in June when they honor Cole Hamels has been moved to 11:35. In the
morning. Guess why? Because it’s on Roku. So, we’re up to three streaming services
just for baseball now? Seriously? At least Roku is free, I believe.
- Lebron
James to Philadelphia is “going to happen” according to someone on Twitter/X. The inference is that his son is
going to Villanova and James is such a family man he’s coming to the Sixers to “keep
the family close.” Ok. Maybe it happens. If not, will there be another tweet saying
this was complete crap?
- For
the record, if you can get LeBron James, obviously, you take him. But it’s not a
move that doesn’t come without consequences. The Sixers would have to sellout
for a year or two to win a championship, which I don’t think would be a slam
dunk. Then what? By then, James is moving on, I’m guessing. And they probably bring
in a couple other big name free agents on short-term deals to make the championship
push. Those guys are moving on, too. Joel Embiid is two years older and, I believe
approaching or at free agency. Presumably, they would also sign Tyrese Maxey to
a long-term deal. So, in two years, it’s Maxey and cap space. You better have a
NBA championship trophy on your shelf to go with it.
- I
saw this tidbit a while ago that offers hope to
people like me wishing Jimmy Butler was still a Sixer. Pat Riley of the Heat
said in regards to an extension for the Miami forward, “We have not discussed that internally right now. . . . We have to look
at making that kind of commitment and when do we do it.” Maybe? Just maybe we
can get him back? I’m reaching, but desperate times and all that.
