Week-in-Review: The “Chase” Is On, Dungy Is Off, and more
It’s time to fire up a Friday Week-in-Review:
• Chase Utley is unbelievable. He came back at least two weeks early from the disabled list after suffering a broken bone in his hand. The “chase” for another World Series appearance is back on.
• If you’re into the sports talk radio war here in Philadelphia, and based on the number of hits I get whenever I post about WIP and/or 97.5 The Fanatic many people are, Rich Rys’ “Game On” in Philadelphia Magazine is a must read. I think he undersells Harry Mayes, and oversells Mike Missanelli’s rift with Skip Bayless, but the “behind-the-scenes” stuff he got, especially on how Missanelli is viewed was pretty interesting. I admit I’m a bit late discovering this June article, but if you haven’t read it yet, check it out.
• As good as the article is, Philly Mag’s ranking of sports talk hosts is laughable. Anthony Gargano and John Gonzalez (also praised too much in the article) are way overrated. Harry Mayes isn’t even listed but Jon Marks is? Ray Didinger is great but hardly on. Ike Reese?
• I first heard about Tony Dungy’s comments about Rex Ryan from WIP’s Rhea Hughes, but I have to agree with her throwing the hypocrisy flag on the NFL’s appointed holy man. Apparently, Dungy has a big problem with Ryan’s propensity to drop the F-bomb. ProFootballTalk.com quoted him from the Dan Patrick Show: “‘I’m disappointed with all the profanity. . . I think Rex can make his points without all that.’ Asked if he would hire a coach who talks the way Ryan does, Dungy answered, ‘I would not. I personally don’t want my players to be around that. I don't want to be around that. . . . It’s hard for me to be around that, and if I were in charge, no, I wouldn't hire someone like that. Now, I’ve been around ‘F’ bombs, so it’s not like it’s new. I just don’t think that has to be part of your every-minute, everyday vocabulary to get your point across.’ Dungy thinks NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would be wise to give Ryan a call and ask him to think about how he's representing the NFL. ‘I would hope that he does,” Dungy said of the possibility of Goodell getting involved. ‘I don’t know that he will or not but I hope that he does because I just don’t think the league needs that. I don’t think our young people need to hear that that’s what’s done to be successful. Because it doesn’t have to be that way.’’’
This is the same man that touted giving Michael Vick a second chance? I haven’t ripped Vick, but the man systematically killed dogs. There’s no way in hell you get to support Vick and then make these thoroughly asinine statements. Dungy seems to be reading his own press a bit too much. I know Goodell already acts like a dictator, which is going to go over real well when there’s a lockout in 2011, but Dungy sounds like an idiot here. Would he like Ryan to be fined for foul language? That’s utterly ridiculous even without the hypocrisy of supporting Vick.
• Brian Westbrook has signed with the San Francisco 49ers. The former Eagles running back was always portrayed as a bright guy armed with a degree from Villanova University. I absolutely hope I’m wrong, but I think this has “disaster” written all over it. I wish he had just moved on with his life after suffering multiple concussions. He’s likely already done irreparable damage to his brain. If Goodell wants to get involved with something, he should look into Westbrook continuing to play football.
• Shawn Andrews has signed with the New York Giants. Big bad New York is going to coddle this guy all season? That should go well.

Comments
I do think it is funny that Goodell tried to tell the players he is in the middle of the labor dispute and is not taking sides. That is a crock and he knows it.
