Will Philly fans boo less now that the Phillies won a World Series?
I tried a few polls on my old sports blog with little response, but with increased hits thanks to the Philly.com Sports blog roll I thought I’d try another one. Besides, I’m genuinely curious about this topic.
With the Phillies’ championship parade a week in our rear view mirror, I’ve been wondering if Philadelphia fans will be a bit less ruthless. So, as you will see to your right at the top of the blog (through about noon on November 14th per Blogger), here’s the poll question:
Will Philly fans boo less now that the Phillies won a World Series?
A) Yes, the weight of a 25-year championship drought is over.
B) Yes, but only until the Eagles have an ugly loss.
C) Maybe we’ll boo the Phillies less, but the other teams don’t get any break.
D) Boo less? Why?
My best guess is “C” - Maybe we’ll boo the Phillies less, but the other teams don’t get any break. Emphasis on the maybe, though. I just think too many fans have grown-up booing, and see it as either a birthright or a badge of honor as a Philly fan.
I also used to try to write a Week in Review on the old Philly Sports Review, which pretty much became a pain in the butt in slow weeks. But since I’m reviving the poll for a week, and there’s been a few issues (in sports) that aren’t worth a full post but are things I want to comment on, here it goes:
• People are still whining about Chase Utley dropping the F-bomb at the rally after the parade. Why? When was it decided we all had to have a stick up our rear-ends? It’s called genuine emotion. People crying about kids being present need to learn how take their kids aside and explain why it’s not something they should say and move on. People comparing it to dropping the F-bomb at their job need to get a clue. Sports is not the real world.
• Andy Reid predictably went out of his way to say L.J. Smith was still the starter at tight end after Brent Celek had one of the best regular season games at the position in franchise history. Way to adjust, Big Red.
• There’s talk that new Phillies GM Ruben Amaro is open to trading Jimmy Rollins, and that the team could never sign Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard. It’s one or the other. Didn’t they do this right after 1980? They enjoyed 27 years without a title that much?
• Allen Iverson was traded again. It’s less than two seasons since everybody thought the Sixers had handed Denver a championship when Philadelphia traded him. I was a fan of him when he was a 76er, but guy just never learned to be a point guard, and he’s just too small to be a pure scorer.
UPDATE:
Final results of the poll are in. My guess was off by one vote with the winner being “D” - Boo less? Why? Gotta love Philly fans!
(If you’re reading this post after the poll has ended, or even if it hasn’t, feel free to add your thoughts in the comments section.)
