Through Friday at 7 PM fans can vote for the Sixers’ new mascot. I voted for Big Ben (see below) despite the unfortunate fact that his name is also the nickname of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Actually, the way it’s going for the Eagles, that might not be such a bad thing. But the last thing we need is another animal Sixers mascot that has no correlation to the team, the city, or anything else, which is what the other two options offer in B. Franklin Dogg and Phil E. Moose.
The spelling of Dogg makes it clear that the Sixers new brass thinks the character will somehow connect with the hip hop crowd. Didn’t we have enough of that with the last mascot that was literally named after the aforementioned generation? At least it has a connection to Philadelphia with the “B. Franklin” portion of the name. I’m not sure where the moose connects beyond the “Phil E.” name, and I really don’t ever want to. The website where fans can vote offers the made up history of each character, but if the connection between a mascot and a team has to be explained, we need a different mascot.
If the connection to the Philadelphia 76ers for Big Ben, named after Benjamin Franklin isn’t clear, put down the cell phone once in a while and read a history book.
Does this all sound frivolous? Well, it should. But then again, we were stuck with Hip Hop for more than a decade. Vote for Big Ben!
