Week 16 Picks

The last two weeks of the NFL are a pain to pick. Too many teams got the bus warming up. Just two soft picks this week. Dallas -7 over Washington (5pts./4.76) Philadelphia -7 over Denver (5pts./4.76)

What Could Have Been for the Phillies was the Real Story; Week 15 Picks

The Phillies tried to pull a fast one on Philadelphia this week, but they ended up looking cheap instead of like the perennial contenders they probably still are becoming. Early in the week reports were all over the news that the Phils were involved in a mega-deal that would bring Roy Halladay to Philly for Cliff Lee with a bunch of prospects involved and a third team -- Seattle. I didn't like the deal from the start. Lee is just as dominant as Halladay, and Lee proved himself in October against the Yankees. Regardless of the reasons why, no one knows what Halladay can do in the playoffs because he's never pitched in them. And regardless of what all the guys with man crushes on Halladay want to say, plenty of guys have been great in the regular season only to shrivel up in the crisp fall air. That said, I wouldn't have much to say about this trade if that was the end of it. I don't expect Halladay to not be able to perform in October, I can see the Phillies apparent log

Reid’s Extension; Week 14 Picks

Readers of this blog already know I’m not a big fan of Andy Reid, so I won’t belabor the obvious that I think giving him a contract extension was a mistake. I heard something about Jeffrey Lurie and Joe Banner prattling on about Reid having the characteristics of a Super Bowl winning coach. I’m so sick of these two little geeks I almost can’t root for this team any more. I actually wouldn’t mind seeing what Reid can do with a quarterback that can run the west coast offense, just like I wouldn’t mind seeing what Donovan McNabb can do with a coach that realizes a running game is important in the NFL. But enough with Banner and Lurie acting like they can figure out who is and isn’t a “Super Bowl coach” based on their study of coaches who have won it before. It’s so utterly stupid, I can’t believe they say it out loud. It’s almost as dumb as Reid’s supporters talking about how he’s the most successful coach in franchise history. If your franchise history sucks, being the best part it is no

Iverson Returns; Week 13 Picks; Tiger Overload

The reaction to the Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers bringing back Allen Iverson has been nothing short of mind boggling to me -- from all sides. I actually heard Iverson is going to start. I saw footage of fans lining up to buy tickets. And Iverson's tearful press conference topped off the oddities. Now all we need is Ed Snider to give his new point guard a hug, but he's busy firing yet another Flyers coach. Keep the pink slips handy, Ed. I figure Eddie Jordan is about two months from the axe. I was a big Iverson fan the first time he was here. I even think his emotion at the press conference was genuine. But unless I missed the trip back to the turn of the century, this is the dumbest move in years -- and we're talkin' about the Sixers. Dumb moves aren't exactly a rarity. Iverson is not the answer to what ails this team. He's never adjusted his game to accommodate his aging body. If he could score like he used to, he would have latched on with a team that has a cha
