Hump Day Review: Trade talk, more

With the proviso that a lot of what I’m about to say could be outdated at any minute, here’s my latest Hump Day Sports Review: Trade talk. Six weeks ago no one expected the Phillies to get Roy Halladay. Now because of all the talk about the possibility, it’s clear fans are poised to turn this into another rallying cry about what the Phillies didn’t get. It’s ridiculous. I’ve heard sports talk-show hosts and callers alike go so far as to suggest acquiring Cliff Lee would be some sort of consolation prize because all of a sudden Halladay is godlike. In about two weeks, the notion of choosing not to gut the farm system of the World Champions who are running away with the division has become stupid. I’ve read Facebook comments suggesting the Phillies won’t get Halladay because “this is Philly after all” and that they will try to “back door it and try to get” Cliff Lee. Apparently, Phillies fans don’t need laser lights the be stupid. Cliff Lee won the American League Cy Young Award last y

Hump Day Review: Pass on Halladay for "Everyone" and more

After a week off during the dullest week in sports, it’s time for a Hump Day Review: Week-in-Review: The Halladay rush. Only in Philadelphia can a team be on a 10-game winning streak entering Wednesday’s action and have most of the city clamoring for a pitcher from another team. The next genius that calls up ESPN 950 to say how fast he’d give up J.A. Happ for Roy Halladay should be forced to stand at the corner of Broad and Pattison as every Phillies fan parades passed and calls him stupid. The Toronto Blue Jays are never going to trade Halladay for Happ. It’s been reported ad nauseam that it would take Happ plus every major league-ready prospect in the Phillies farm system. How long did people bemoan the fact that the Phillies didn’t have a good farm system? No, I don’t know anything about how good the guys in the minor leagues are and neither does 99% of the people dying to give them away for Halladay. But I do hear a lot of people saying how loaded the Phillies are in the minors. I

Hump Day Review: All-Star Thoughts

A slightly delayed Hump Day sports review after some technical glitches. (I just love having to constantly reset my Comcast connection, don’t you?) So here’s my All-Star edition of my quick-fire responses to the stories that caught my attention this week: This one counts. First of all, the All-Star Games determine home-field for the World Series every year, so it would be just fantastic if someone at Fox could figure out that “this one counts” is a stupid catch phrase for their advertisements about the game. But since the network can’t figure out that an entire channel acting as the media wing for the Republican Party doesn’t qualify as a “news” station, I won’t hold my breath. More importantly, this one shouldn’t count. Though baseball still probably has the best all-star game in sports, the notion of giving it true meaning has only detracted from the game. It was great to watch the best of the best go out and play a game with all the their skill and effort just because it was the ga

Hump Day Review: Rollins, Soccer Fans, and more

It’s a short week for most of the Monday through Friday, 9-to-5 folks out there, so the weekend is right around the corner. In fact, you’ve probably zoned out for the week about an hour ago, didn’t you? So, whether it’s a Hump Day or not, my weekly look at sports marches on. Week-in-Review: Drop JRoll Down. A 4-day vacation really did a lot for Jimmy Rollins, who went 0-for-5 Tuesday night in a game the Phillies lost in extra innings. It’s time to drop Rollins to sixth in the lineup, and leave him there. Putting him there for one game thinking he’s suddenly gotten some type of message is a joke. Rollins simply isn’t a leadoff hitter. He doesn’t take pitches, and doesn’t even seem to comprehend the need for a leadoff hitter to do so. He also doesn’t steal anywhere near enough bases (regardless of Chris Wheeler’s mindless “you don’t want to distract the hitters” rants). Every time he’s been dropped in the lineup, he seems to show signs of life. Besides, Shane Victorino has more speed, w
