Eagles Surprise in the Draft; Weekend Wrap

I promised to be one of the first to praise the Eagles if they went out and got the wide receiver they needed. While two days after the first day of the draft certainly doesn’t make me “first,” and the Birds only drafted a receiver that might be the guy they needed, I’m happy they have at least attempted to get a “stud” receiver. The NFL Draft may be the most over-hyped event in sports besides a Don King promoted fight. No one truly knows who will turn out to be the All-Pro, or the sleeper, or the scrappy fifth-rounder that ends up with a career playing NFL football. After the first half of round one even the “experts” are mostly guessing. I have no idea as to how well the Eagles drafted this weekend beyond what those same experts are telling me, and, despite all the brilliant comments posted with the utmost bravado all over the blogosphere and philly.com and every other newspapers’ .com, neither does any other fan. But, I like what I’ve heard so far about the Eagles’ draft. They at le

Eagles Can’t Win; Week-in-Review

Even when the Eagles are right, they’re wrong. So, now Sheldon Brown wants to be traded. He’s unhappy with the contract extension that reportedly has four years left on it. And he feels disrespected because the Eagles won’t negotiate with his agent. First of all, Brown and his agent are stupid to do this. Brown’s not even a perennial All-Pro. He took the signing bonus before he hit free agency. Now he’s upset because other players at his position are being paid more than him. If only he or some sort of legal representative could have seen this coming. If only there was a trend of NFL player contracts escalating year after year, even in the worst economy most people alive have ever experienced. Oh, wait. He had the benefit of both. Yet, the most absurd part of the situation is that Brown’s entrance into the Idiots Hall of Fame with his comment that he was being disrespected – ah, yes, another athlete being paid millions to play football is so discouraging to watch – didn’t make the Eagl

Birds Trade for O-lineman; Week-in-Review

The Eagles have traded for left tackle Jason Peters, giving up the 28th selection and a fourth-rounder in the draft plus an undisclosed pick in 2010 according to ESPN.com. This is classic Birds, and doesn’t excite me a little bit. Yes, it’s the prudent move, but it just doesn’t get it done. I’ve already heard this takes the Eagles out of the running for Anquan Boldin, who the Arizona Cardinals have announced is available for trade. The Eagles are like the stodgy parents that never give the kids what they want. No, you can’t have the shiny toy, we’re going to put the money towards college. Problem is, it just doesn’t work in the NFL . . . and the Eagles’ Super Bowl trophies total proves it. This team needs to go get a stud receiver, and, once again, they’re not going to do it. It’s just their typical we-know-better-than-everybody-else mentality at work. It really does seem like they go out of their way not to make the popular move. This move isn’t even an upgrade. They simply replaced

Sixers, NBA Playoff Predictions

In case you missed it, the NBA season ended yesterday. If you didn’t notice, I have to assume David Stern will forgive you. After all, the Cleveland Cavaliers didn’t notice either, giving pretty much all of their best players the night off against the 76ers despite having a chance to tie the best single season home record in NBA history. Then again, the Cleveland scrubs took the Sixers to overtime, and only a slip to the floor by Daniel Gibson – who put up a career-high 28 points – allowed the Sixers to get a 111-110 win. If that doesn’t paint a pathetic enough picture, consider that the Sixers had plenty to play for. Not only were they attempting to avoid entering the playoffs on a 7-game skid since clinching a playoff spot, they had the chance to move up a seed in the playoffs and face Orlando instead of Boston (which may not have been quite as bad as once thought). In fact, just 3 more wins in that stretch would have allowed them to move up to the fifth spot to face Atlanta. I real

Relax on the Phils, Fans Feed their Rep, etc.

Since philly.com’s Sports Fans Blog Roll feed posts my link every time I update my blog template, I feel like I should start posting something on sports at least once a week. Otherwise, I kind of look like a dope when the title beside my blog title is "Phillies Return; Villanova Looks to Win It All" almost a week after ‘Nova came up short against North Carolina. I tried this a while back under my old sports blog title, Philly Sports Review, in Week-in-Review style posts. I eventually got bored with the purely sports angle, because there’s not always something in Philadelphia sports to have a strong opinion on – despite what plenty of media members will say. But the philly.com link is one of my main sources of hits, so while it might not always be purely sports (or weekly), here’s my first post in the second attempt at my weekly, quick hits look at the events of the last week or so: --Can we exhale now? The Phillies won their first game. The football mentality some fans – and

Phillies Return; Villanova Looks to Win It All

Villanova fans can rest easy. I don’t think they’ll be playing in the championship game Monday night after playing North Carolina in the Final Four on Saturday night. Since I’ve been wrong about much of the NCAA Tournament, the Wildcats will probably be hoisting the trophy sometime around 11:30 PM Monday night. Again, I’m a ‘Nova fan, and they’ve made a believer out of me after they beat Duke. The Pittsburgh game was the best of the Tourney, and if they win it all the Scottie Reynolds buzzer-beater will rival the double-play that put the Phillies in the playoffs last year in Philadelphia sports lore (except for ‘Nova haters). In fact, I think Villanova is the second best team in the Final Four. But with Ty Lawson apparently recovered from his toe injury, the ‘Cats are playing the best team. Villanova’s guards are the strength of their team, but Lawson may single-handedly cancel them out. Despite the people that think Dante Cunningham is bound for the NBA, which I don’t see at all, Vill

Pass on Cutler

Now that the Denver Broncos have taken time to announce that they will be attempting to trade their starting quarterback, Jay Cutler, most Donovan McNabb detractors appear to be breathing heavy at the prospect of acquiring him. While I’m ready to move on from the McNabb “era,” I’m not totally sold on Cutler. I see the appeal (besides the fact that he’s simply not McNabb). Cutler’s a young guy who has already started in the NFL for a few years with some mild success. It seems like a chance to skip over the growing pains of letting Kevin Kolb start for the first time or bringing in a rookie. Yet, besides the fact that the Eagles management is allergic to doing anything the fans might actually want done, I just can’t get all that excited about the thought of Cutler playing for the Eagles. I’m not sure it matters who the quarterback is any more. This team has just spent the bulk of yet another free agency period doing next to nothing. Despite the one year when they made a splash by signin
