Eagles Crush Cowboys; Sneak into Playoffs

The word miracle is a bit too strong for the fact that the Philadelphia Eagles are in the playoffs, even if you limit it to football. But yesterday will certainly be one Eagles fans will remember for a long time. After 13-point underdog Oakland shocked Tampa Bay and Houston beat Chicago, the beloved Birds once again controlled their own fate. So did their opponent, the despised Dallas Cowboys. But luckily it’s late in December, so Tony Romo played like the undrafted quarterback he is. If he wasn’t before, he certainly is now officially a choke artist. He threw 21 of 39 for 183 yards, 1 pick, and coughed up two fumbles. Reports are he later collapsed in the shower, crying because he kept dropping the soap. Ok, I may have added that last part. As for the miracle part, Oakland and Tampa Bay had clearly (in retrospect) been going in opposite directions. I even heard Ron Jaworski call for Oakland to win the game. And Houston beat a mediocre Chicago team. But give the Eagles credit.

Eagles Are What They Are

Watching the Eagles game yesterday felt like the epitome of being a fan of this team. Despite everything that has gone wrong this season, the Eagles had their fate in their own hands, and not only did they let it slip away it was brutally, cruelly obvious that they were going to lose. I literally don’t know how sports reporters do it sometimes. To say the same thing over and over has to be mind numbing. Despite the drops, which were horrendous, the fact is it’s the same old thing with this team. After getting back into the playoff race with a balanced offensive attack, the Eagles passed the ball 46 times versus 16 called rushes. And the game ended with the Eagles one yard from a touchdown because . . . stop me if you heard this before . . . they were out of timeouts. As I type, I’m hearing Jon Runyan spew that company line. If we make the catches, this, that, and the other doesn’t matter. Well, it does matter. When the evidence slaps you in the face that running the ball consistently h

Another Comcast Swindle

While Comcast spends millions on advertisements meant to convince us all that competition is just unfair, they’ve apparently decided to start charging customers for putting their services back on when Comcast’s own errors cause it to go off. As my computer slowed to a crawl, even when I wasn’t surfing the web, I reluctantly contacted Comcast technical support. This would be the same technical support that came to the house after I purchased their online service because it wasn’t working and told me my computer was too old to use the service. This is the same computer I’m still using four years later. A techy friend of the family came over and fixed the problem literally within minutes. Comcast’s wire from the modem to the computer didn’t work. It was the first thing the family friend checked. These are the same people who have owned the Flyers and the Sixers for over a decade. So Comcast repair once again came to the house . . . and did nothing. The repairman fixed absolutely nothing i

Eagles Ho-hum Win, Sixers Bounce Mo, Soul Suspended

Not much has motivated me to blog lately despite a decent amount of sports news. So, here’s a Cliff Notes version of what should have been posts: • The Eagles win over the Cleveland Browns was a case of doing what you are supposed to do. The Browns stink. In reality this was a bad week for the Birds. All the wrong teams won, and now they have one last chance to catch the teams they are chasing for the playoffs. • Mo Cheeks got hosed. What, exactly, is Ed Stefanski doing? The Sixers go on a major tear last season by running, he brings in Elton Brand and ignores the need for a pure shooter, and blames Cheeks for a slow start? Weak. Tony DiLeo may be a great guy, but bringing in the assistant general manager to coach hints at a total panic move. • It figures. The Soul win the Arena Bowl and the league is forced to suspend operations the following year. It was a great game to find on some obscure cable station flipping around on a boring night; they should have left it at that. And, it’s o

Here We Go, Again

The Eagles are quickly becoming that movie on cable that you’ve seen a thousand times, know by heart, and yet you watch it every time your channel-surfing lands on it. The Eagles were left for dead after they could only manage a tie against the Cincinnati Bengals. Now, after back-to-back wins, it seems like winning their final three games will be enough to get them into the playoffs. Sure, they need a little help, but the schedules suggest they will get it. Playoffs? Yes, playoffs. The Eagles went to New York and shocked the Giants yesterday. Andy Reid followed-up Thanksgiving night’s sensible play calling with more of the same. Donovan McNabb used his legs when he needed to, and he has dodged his greatest fear of being dubbed a running quarterback. The obvious questions begged to be asked: Where was this play calling all season? Why can’t McNabb realize that there isn’t some asterisk on his career for running when necessary? The temptation is to say, “Who cares? They’re winning.” Of c

ESPN 950 vs. WIP 610

A Thanksgiving night game for the Eagles was nice, but the 10 days in-between games hasn’t left much to get excited about. With the Giants coming up on Sunday and one of their starting wide receivers being done for the year after he was carted away in handcuffs, Philadelphia would normally be frothing at the mouth. Instead, a fair amount of fans, including yours truly, are actually worried that the Birds might win. The last thing I want to see is this team once again get hot, win out, squeak into the playoffs, and lose some time in mid-January. That would give the front office yet another chance to trot out their ridiculous notions that they are a championship caliber team, which will likely happen even if the Eagles lose out. They simply are not a championship caliber team. They’re not even good, mostly because Andy Reid’s play calling is absurd, but I’m sure that all will get rehashed Sunday night into Monday. So, I thought I’d look at the two most popular venues Philadelphia fans
