King Makes Another Blunder

Philadelphia 76ers general manager Billy King essentially announced this week that Allen Iverson would not be traded. Anyone else wondering what the point was? It’s not even August yet. Does Billy need a vacation or something? If this is anything but a ploy to get better offers, it’s idiotic. I have no problem with not trading Iverson if there’s no deal to be made. But for the same guy who ranted about changing the culture of his sub-.500, non-playoff team to announce less three weeks into the part of the off-season in which trades can be made that he’s taking his best player off the trading block is ridiculous. Why say anything? It’s not as though King actually said Iverson would be traded. And to suggest that the team would ignore a great offer tomorrow simply because you announced you weren’t trading Iverson is, I hope, even more ridiculous. By the way, it’s not as though King has been tied up with all of the other moves he’s made this off-season. He drafted three players, two of wh

The Birds are Back

Romanticize the day pitchers and catchers report all you want, the first day of Eagles training camp is what brings Philadelphia sports fans back to life. By now the Phillies are usually buried in the standings, the Sixers off-season becomes as disappointing as their season, and Flyers fans think this is their year and are ticked that their team isn’t talked about enough. (Sound familiar?) Finally, we are rescued by the slap of colliding pads in Lehigh, and at least a few die-hards — even after a 6-10 season — whisper about finally seeing a Super Bowl champion in the Eagles. Despite their off-season slumber, I think the Birds will bounce back this season. My official prediction . . . I know you’re waiting breathlessly . . . will come just before Week #1. That said, I think the over/under of 8 ½ wins I’ve heard is low, assuming they only incur an average amount of injuries (and Donovan McNabb isn’t one of them). The Eagles essentially have what they want — a personality-less, vanilla ro

Philly Fans Fed-up . . . with Philly Fans?

Apparently even Philly fans are fed up with, well, Philly fans. ESPN.com’s Bill Simmons pitied us in his latest and cited support from the home fans. In response to a Philly fan’s e-mail fearing the possible trade of Allen Iverson, he writes: [It is] the most underrated sports subplot of the summer -- every horrified Philly fan dreading the news that Billy King gave away Iverson. It's legitimately cruel. Hasn't this city suffered enough? In last week's NBA column I suggested that Philly ban pro sports for a calendar year for everyone's safety. And normally, whenever I write something about a fan base that could be perceived as negative, the fans always fight back in droves and I'm guaranteed some hate mail . . . But with that comment? Not only did I get zero complaints, some Philly fans even e-mailed just to say, "Right on, the sports scene is absolutely morbid right now, never seen anything like this before" and "I majored in psych in college and am

Phils Offer Nothing to Care About

I was asked the other day if I was ripping the Phillies on my blog. Putting aside the fact that the same person clearly didn’t bother to read my blog, I decided my recent attempt to ignore the team doesn’t cut it. Did you know there’s only 12 days til training camp? Ok, ok, . . . the Phillies. It was obvious this team was going to be crushed in inter-league play, but to follow-up with losing a series at home to a mediocre Padre team and an opening game of the series the lowly Pirates is just sad. Throw in the series loss to the one American League team they had a chance against, and you would think it’s as ugly as it gets. But, no, this is Philly. We get the added bonus of possibly our best pitcher Brett Myers assaulting his wife . . . in public. I’m not suggesting the act is any less reprehensible if it’s in private, but the level of stupidity goes up a few notches when a professional athlete thinks he can get away with it on the street. Then, of course, the Phillies, apparently wanti
