The Sixers: An Early Evaluation

I don’t know if I’m allowed to talk about “old times” at my age, but the current state of Philly sports kind of feels like a blast from the past. The Eagles are dead, dead, dead, . . . unless of course they win this week. The Flyers are contenders — just ask any of the 30,000 fans who watch hockey. And then there’s the 76ers. I was embarrassed to realize how little I’ve posted about my beloved Sixers after the Inquirer’s Blinq pointed out the lack of Sixers blogs. I’m shocked there’s a lack of any type of blog, but the local pro hoops team certainly deserves more respect then it gets in this town. Afterall, it’s the last team to warrant a championship parade around here. Maurice Cheeks — Mr. Class, and our last link to that title — is back on the bench as the head coach. And, by the way, Allen Iverson, a somewhat rejuvenated Chris Webber, and budding all-star Andre Iguodala grace the starting lineup. They even play the (I certainly hope still ) hated Boston Celtics tonight. Of course

Thome Traded / Monday Night Pick

Is it possible Pat Gillick, the new general manager of the Phillies, has already outperformed Ed Wade? This guy stepped up big time by moving Jim Thome out of town for centerfielder Aaron Rowand and two prospects from the Chicago White Sox. I know absolutely nothing about Rowand or the other two, and don't care at the moment what they do next year. This trade is about Ryan Howard, and finally shows that the Phillies want to do more then have guys like Gentlemen Jim in the dugout. I don't have a problem with Thome. He got hurt, and you can't blame him for Charlie Manuel and Wade not having the guts to sit him in favor of Howard. It was ridiculous to watch Howard — who won the National League Rookie of the Year playing virtually half a season — languish on the bench and in the minors because they didn't want to offend Thome. Wade actually discussed trying Howard in the outfield next season instead of having him supplant Thome. I'm not a "baseball guy," but a

Farewell T.O. / Thanksgiving Day Picks

Eagles fans finally have something to be thankful for — the Terrell Owens saga has ended. Whether you’re happy, angry, or just ticked that the whole thing was bungled so badly, I think you have to be happy it’s over. The real reason I logged on was to toss out a couple of Thanksgiving day picks. I’m loving Denver –2 vs. the Cowgirls and Atlanta –3 vs. Detroit. These lines have already moved a bit, but I think both games are blowouts and, after a 3-0 week, will continue to improve my for entertainment only picks’ record that now stands at 17-11-1. Happy Thanksgiving!

Whose the best Philly sports talker? / NFL, College Picks

I thought the launching of WPEN 950 would breathe some life into sports talk in this town. Maybe the Terrell Owens non-drama has soured me on the entire medium, but the truth is the whole concept has lost whatever it once had. While it’s good to have Jody MacDonald back in town, putting him head-to-head against Howard Eskin is a mistake. Tony Bruno is fun for a while, but his radio-guy-schtick doesn’t hold up over the long haul. And Jim Rome is so bad, Tony Bruno gave me — just some blogger — a quote on Rome’s ridiculously dull format. Over on 610 WIP, midday continues to be a black hole with the ridiculous, attention-grabbing, I’m-in-the-know-and-you’re-not tone of Anthony Gargano. Mike Missanelli is solid, and likely the best on the air, but his idiot partner (Gargano) makes it impossible to listen to him very long. Angelo Cataldi fell in love with himself years ago, and flushed a good show down the toilet. Glen Macnow is still one of the best, it’s just a shame that he moved to the

NFL Week 10 Picks

Are you sick of hearing about ex-Eagle Terrell Owens, yet? Me, too. And since, according to the media, nothing else has happened in the world of sports in the last 10 days, I’m getting right to my picks. After a 3-0 week, I’m back at 12-11-1. Not where I wanted to be in November! But, as they say, there’s plenty of football to be played. I’m going all NFL this week. So, for entertainment purposes only, I’m picking: · Vikings +9 · KC +2.5 · Pats –3 Bird watching. It’s the Birds-Cowgirls, and I can’t even begin to be objective. I hate those stinkin’ Cowgirls, and hope the Birds can start the Post-T.O. era with a MNF ass-kickin’ of the ‘girls. But, unless the blood is really pumping Monday night, I’m staying away. Week in Review: · The next commentator that whines about all the Owens coverage, followed by a rant on T.O., should be slapped.

T.O. Countdown Is On

Terrell Owens is leaving the Eagles after the season. We know it. They know it. He knows it. And he’s now running his big, dumb mouth in a petty effort to . . . yeah, I don’t know either. But he continues to take shots at Donovan McNabb, the organization, and anyone else to get attention. At this point, it’s time T.O. left. Right now. The season is not going to result in a Super Bowl victory, and we all knew that was the only goal this year. McNabb should’ve been operated on weeks ago to try to keep that goal alive. Now the excuse for not doing that is that he might not have returned all season. Unfortunately, the way he’s played makes the risk of him not returning more than worth the chance Koy Detmer could’ve tread water for two months until McNabb’s healthy return. So, now we have a QB whose rarely effective, a coach without enough balls to sit him, and a team going nowhere. While it might dent the vanilla image this team works so hard to maintain, it’s time to do something drastic.
